This report initiates coverage of the parallel optics segment by Ovum RHK’s Optical Components service. In recent months, the InfiniBand Trade Association ratified inclusion of Quad-SFP, which is based on parallel optics, and certified active optical cables as compliant with InfiniBand’s requirements. In addition, Intel announced its entrance into the high-speed interconnect market with an active optical cable product. These events have revived both parallel optics and Quad-SFP. The market has grown from niche status and may emerge as a mainstream opportunity for equipment makers. In this report, we analyze the transceiver supplier landscape. While Avago Technologies is the leading incumbent, both Zarlink and now Intel are aggressively challenging its hold of the market. |
