The French market for meat and poultry stagnated over the review period, reaching its highest value in 1999, and amounted to Euro18.8 billion (US$17.0 billion) in 2001. As in other European countries, consumption of meat was affected by the BSE crisis in 1996. The market for red meat started to recover from concerns about BSE since 1997 and collapsed again in 2000, but started to grow again in 2001.
