The German market for credit and charge cards amounted to Euro 379 billion (US$358 billion) in 2001, an increase by 4.7% on the previous year. Over the five year review period the market increased by 23.5%. Commonly, Germany is regarded as a cash country. Although card circulation is not significantly lower than in many other West European countries, the share of cash payments remains higher in Germany than in countries such as the US or UK.
