The UK market for commercial banking grew by 2.3% since 2000 to reach a value of £317 billion (US$475.5 billion) in 2001. Activity in the market increased by 22% over the review period, with the strongest growth in the early period, due to a wave of demutualizations. The economic slowdown has affected growth in the commercial banking industry with businesses having smaller financial reserves and banks less willing to hand out loans after the exuberance of the late nineties.
