This Access Asia report covers the market for canned seafood in China. The growth of the market is symptomatic of changing food-buying patterns in China - the growth in living space & supermarket shopping is leading to increased use of canned seafoods.Canned seafood sales saw one of the most rapid growth rates between 1996 and 2002, rising in value by 97.1% over that period. Seafood is a popular part of the Chinese diet, but supply of fresh seafood has been dogged by distribution problems, so that many areas have only limited fresh supplies. This has created strong demand for good quality canned seafood, which is popular because it can be stored for a long time, and does not require refrigeration or freezing, thus making it useful to households without a refrigerator or freezer unit. |
