The UK market for books has grown by 2.3% since 2000 to reach a value of over £3.6 billion (US$5.5 billion) in 2001. The market's value rose by nearly 12% over the review period. The consumer books sector, including hardback and paperback fiction and non fiction, accounts for more than two thirds of the book market. Within this sector, children's books experienced particularly strong growth, partly on the strength of the popularity of the Harry Potter books.
