Exports are escalating despite stiff competition and rising material and labor costs, with shipments likely to increase by at least 20 percent through 2008.China is expected to account for a significant share of the forecasted 1.6 billion units global output, valued at US$10.6 billion, by 2010. Most makers in the region are expanding their production capacity by as much as 50 percent — augmenting production areas and upgrading equipment and machinery — in order to meet rising volume orders from overseas customers. The following are some of the key trends we see in China's battery charger industry: • Prices will increase by 5 percent to 10 percent through the first half of 2008 due to rising production overhead. The increase in costs of ABS plastic, copper and other metal parts is one of the main reasons for higher export prices in coming months. • The key export market for battery chargers made in China will continue to be the EU, notwithstanding makers' concern about higher production costs for RoHS-compliant products. • Apart from housing and cosmetic design, enhanced durability will be the major product development focus for most battery charger makers in China. Many are developing standard intelligent fast chargers and multi-application specialized chargers. • To enhance their export capability, most battery charger suppliers in China will continue to broaden their current product lines and release more products for a wider scope of application. This report covers the three major battery charger types produced in China: universal or standard, specialized and adapter. For the purposes of this report, universal or standard battery chargers are defined as stand-alone chargers used for AAA, AA, C, D, 9V, button-cell and other common battery types. This type of charger is used for batteries for two or more applications, mostly in household electronics.Specialized battery chargers are also stand-alone chargers, but are used for batteries that are application specific, or those that are used only for one type of product.Adapter-type battery chargers are plug-in chargers with power supply, typically used for mobile phones. The battery is automatically charged by plugging the charger into a mains power or wall socket and inserting the connector into the phone's contact points. These may include car-use chargers. The Products & Prices section in this report details the specifications and price ranges of battery chargers made in China. The latest product development trends, as well as manufacturers' R&D plans, are discussed in the Product Development section. The Industry Overview elaborates on the industry composition, highlighting key characteristics of different types of suppliers. The majority of battery charger suppliers in China are direct exporters. The majority of these makers are small- or medium-scale companies, either privately owned local companies or foreign-owned.Reflecting the industry structure, 85 percent of suppliers featured in this report are China-owned while the rest have major foreign stakeholders.Production is concentrated in the provinces of Guangdong and Jiangsu which together account for more than half of all battery chargers exported from China.
